Call to Worship

Leader: The people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light.
People: The light has shined on the nations who live in the shadow of death.
Leader: The true light that enlightens every person is coming into the world. The Word
became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth, and we beheld his
glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.
People: The Lord is our light and our salvation. We shall not be afraid.
Leader: The peace of Christ be with you all.
People: Amen!

Hymn                                                                                                  Shine, Jesus, Shine

Lord, the light of Your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness, shining
Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us
Set us free by the truth You now bring us
Shine on me, shine on me

[Chorus]
Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire
Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth Your word, Lord, and let there be light
Lord, I come to Your awesome presence
From the shadows into Your radiance
By the blood, I may enter Your brightness
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness
Shine on me, shine on me

As we gaze on Your kingly brightness
So our faces display Your likeness
Ever changing from glory to glory
Mirrored here, may our lives tell Your story
Shine on me, shine on me

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer      from Before the Amen: Creative Resources for Worship by Sue Henley

Gracious God, you gather us here this summer morning as we welcome a new season. Your presence is made known to us in the beauty that surrounds us with flowers, birds, rain and sunshine. Summer activities speak of life and joy in our community. And yet, as we look around and listen to the news, we recognize that all is not well with our world. We confess we sometimes wonder what it is we are called to do. Forgive our faltering faith and bless us, O God, with a spirit of discernment in our decisions, with compassion in our conversation, with love in our listening, with perseverance in our praying, and above all with hope that holds us in all seasons. We pray together:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen

Hymn                                                                                                           See A Victory

The weapon may be formed, but it won’t prosper
When the darkness falls, it won’t prevail
Cause the God I serve knows only how to triumph
My God will never fail
Oh my God will never fail Chorus

Chorus: I’m gonna see a victory
I’m gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to you Lord
I’m gonna see a victory
I’m gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to you Lord
There’s power in the mighty name of Jesus
Every war He wages He will win
I’m not backing down from any giant
‘Cause I know how this story ends
Yes I know how this story ends   Chorus

You take what the enemy meant for evil
And you turn it for good
You turn it for good
You take what the enemy meant for evil
And you turn it for good
You turn it for good x2    Chorus

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

from Creation Sings Your Praise, edited by Annabel Shilson-Thomas, Canterbury Press, 2010

God of the impossible,
We pray for justice, peace and reconciliation;
When the challenges seem too many,
Remind us of your resurrection power;
When the task seems overwhelming,
Remind us of the miracle of love;
And when apathy threatens us,
Remind us of your vision of a world made whole.
Help us to hope that the impossible can happen
And live as if it might do so today.

We pray to God, the miracle worker, who taught us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Father’s Day Prayer

Hymn                                                                   Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)

Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed Chorus

Chorus: My chains are gone, I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love,
Amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures Chorus

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God who called me here below
Will be forever mine, will be forever mine
You are forever mine Chorus

Message by 2020 Graduates of Village Baptist Church

Hymn                                                                                                                    Nobody

Why You ever chose meHas always been a mystery
All my life I’ve been told I belong at the end of the line
With all the other Not-Quites
With all the Never-Get-It-Rights
But it turns out they’re the ones You’ve been looking for all this time

Chorus: ‘Cause I’m just a nobody
Trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody who saved my soul
Ever since You rescued me
You gave my heart a song to sing
I’m living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus
I’m living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus

Moses had stage fright
And David brought a rock to a sword fight
You picked 12 outsiders nobody would’ve chosen
And You changed the world
Well, the moral of the story is
Everybody’s got a purpose
So when I hear that devil start talking to me, saying
“Who do you think you are”
I say… Chorus

So let me go down down down in history
As another blood-bought faithful member of the family
And if they all forget my name, well, that’s fine with me
I’m living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus Chorus

Hymn                                                                                             My Jesus, I Love Thee

My Jesus I love Thee I know Thou art mine
For Thee all the follies of sin I resign

If ever I loved Thee my Jesus ’tis now

I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me
And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus ’tis now
In mansions of glory and endless delight
I’ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright
I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow
If ever I loved Thee my Jesus ’tis now

Text for the Message                                                                                1 Peter 5 (NIV)

To be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.

She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

Message

Hymn                                                                                      God Will Take Care of You
1 Peter 5:7- Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Be not dismayed whate’er betide
God will take care of you
Beneath His wings of love abide
God will take care of you Chorus

Chorus: God will take care of you
Through every day o’er all the way
He will take care of you
God will take care of you

Through days of toil when heart doth fail
God will take care of you
When dangers fierce your path assail
God will take care of you Chorus
All you may need He will provide
God will take care of you
Nothing you ask will be denied
God will take care of you Chorus

No matter what may be the test
God will take care of you
Lean weary one upon His breast
God will take care of you Chorus

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer                         by Mindi Welton-Mitchell on rev-o-lution.org

Wondrous and Amazing God, You inspire us in Your creation to create in our lives. You teach us as Your disciple us to disciple others. You inspire us. You stir in us the spirit of compassion for others as You have compassion for us. You are awe-inspiring far beyond what we can imagine, and yet we dare try. We have a glimpse of Your grace and beauty in our human lives. We have a glimpse of Your majesty and sovereignty in the world You made. We have Your wisdom and insight in our minds and hearts through Your spirit. Call us into a way of life that is worship, that is trust and faithfulness, in our stewardship of the earth and care for each other. In the name of the Creator, Holy Wisdom from on high, and our brother Jesus Christ, we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Chorus: There is a balm in Gilead

Sometimes I feel discouraged
And think my work’s in vain
But then the Holy Spirit
Revives my soul again Chorus

Don’t ever feel discouraged
For Jesus is your friend

Text for the Message                                                                     1 Peter 4:12- 19 (NIV)

Dear friends, don’t be surprised about the fiery trials that have come among you to test you. These are not strange happenings. Instead, rejoice as you share Christ’s suffering. You share his suffering now so that you may also have overwhelming joy when his glory is revealed. If you are mocked because of Christ’s name, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory—indeed, the Spirit of God—rests on you.

Now none of you should suffer as a murderer or thief or evildoer or rebel. But don’t be ashamed if you suffer as one who belongs to Christ. Rather, honor God as you bear Christ’s name. Give honor to God,because it’s time for judgment to begin with God’s own household. But if judgment starts with us, what will happen to those who refuse to believe God’s good news? If the righteous are barely rescued, what will happen to the godless and sinful? So then, those who suffer because they follow God’s will should commit their lives to a trustworthy creator by doing what is right.

Message

Hymn                                                                                I Want Jesus to Walk with Me

I want Jesus to walk with me; I want Jesus to walk with me; all along my pilgrim journey, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

In my trials, Lord, walk with me; in my trials, Lord, walk with me; when my heart I almost breaking, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me; when I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me; when my head is bowed in sorrow, Lord, I wasn’t Jesus to walk with me.

People; We praise the Spirit that spans the ages. Amen!

Hymn                                                                                       Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling

Holy Spirit ever dwelling
In the holiest realms of light
Holy Spirit ever brooding
O’er a world of gloom and night
Holy Spirit ever raising
Sons of earth to thrones on high
Living life imparting Spirit
Thee we praise and magnify

Holy Spirit ever living
As the Church’s very life
Holy Spirit ever striving
Through her in a ceaseless strife
Holy Spirit ever forming
In the Church the mind of Christ
You we praise with endless worship
For your fruit and gifts unpriced

Holy Spirit ever working
Through the Church’s ministry
Quickening strengthening and absolving
Setting captive sinners free
Holy Spirit ever binding
Age to age and soul to soul
In a fellowship unending
You we worship and extol

O God, you come to us in unexpected places
In isolation, behind closed doors
On dusty roads, as we go from place to place
In video chats with friends and telephone conversations with loved ones.
You come bringing us peace, where there is no peace
You come bringing us hope when everything seems hopeless
You come bringing us courage when we are afraid.
Come and be among us now, in every place where we are.
Open our eyes to see you, open our hearts to know you.
In the name of the Risen Christ we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Hymn                                                                                                     Lord, I Need You

Lord, I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You’re the One that guides my heart

CHORUS: Lord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
Where You are, Lord, I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
When I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus, You’re my hope and stay

You’re my one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Text for the Message                                                                                  1 4:1-11 (NIV)

Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Message

Hymn                                                                                                                 Pass It on

Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to thee;
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of thy love,
At the impulse of thy love.

Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for thee;
Take my voice and let me sing
Always, only, for my King,
always, only for my King

Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages for thee;
Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold,
Not a mite would I withhold.

Take my love, my God, I pour
At thy feet its treasure store;
Take myself and will be
Ever, only, all for thee,
Ever, only, all for thee.

Call to Worship                                                         From Taught by Love by Lavon Bayler

Leader: The God of heaven and earth calls us together. We come to explore matters of the Spirit

People: There is so much we do not know or understand. So much of God is unknown to us.

L: Let us look carefully at the objects of our worship. Our attention is easily diverted from God.

P: We want to worship the One who gives us breath. We reach for the Reality beyond our knowing.

L: In God we live and move and have our being. All that we have and are comes from God.

P: God is not limited to shrines made by us.  God is everywhere present in the whole universe.

Hymn                                                                                                       In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone! Who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer                                          From Taught by Love by Lavon Bayler

Let the sound of praising you be heard among us today, and in all the places of your dominion, O God. We believe you are present with us even when we cannot feel or see or hear you as we would like. We thank you for the times when you have caught our attention. We ask for one of those times today. Shake us out of our complacency and our cherished iniquities. Hold us in your steadfast love and call forth within us an awareness of all your blessings. Stimulate among us an eagerness to live as you intend.

Praying Together:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen

Text for the Message                                                                     1 Peter 3: 13-22 (NIV)

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Message

Hymn                                                                                                                 Pass It on

It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing;
That’s how it is with God’s Love,
Once you’ve experienced it,
Your spread the love to everyone
You want to pass it on.

What a wonderous time is spring,
When all the tress are budding
The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming;
That’s how it is with God’s love,
Once you’ve experienced it.
You want to sing, it’s fresh like spring,
You want to pass it on.

I wish for you my friend
This happiness that I’ve found;
You can depend on God
It matters not where you’re bound,
I’ll shout it from the mountain top – PRAISE GOD!
I want the world to know
The Lord of love has come to me
I want to pass it on.

People: We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.

L: Like living stones be built yourselves into a spiritual house.

P: We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.

P: We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.

Hymn                                                                                              We Are God’s People

We are God’s people, the chosen of the Lord,
Born of His Spirit, established by His Word;
Our cornerstone is Christ alone,
And strong in Him we stand:
O let us live transparently
And walk heart to heart and hand in hand.

We are God’s loved ones, the Bride of Christ our Lord,
For we have known it, the love of God outpoured;
Now let us learn how to return
The gift of love once given:
O let us share each joy and care,
And live with a zeal that pleases Heaven.

We are the Body of which the Lord is Head,
Called to obey Him, now risen from the dead;
He wills us be a family,
Diverse yet truly one:
O let us give our gifts to God,
And so shall his work on earth be done.

We are a temple, the Spirit’s dwelling place,
Formed in great weakness, a cup to hold God’s grace;
We die alone, for on its own
Each ember loses fire:
Yet joined in one the flame burns on
To give warmth and light, and to inspire.

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer                  From Lectionary Worship Aids by H. Burnham Kirkland

All week long, our Father, we have heard the cacophony of conflicting voices; we have been enmeshed in the busyness of our work; we have been torn by the urgency of many responsibilities; we have been anxious about many things. It is good for us to come here for a while, to set aside this time for meditation and worship, to sit beside the still waters, and to hear the gentle voice of the Good Shepherd.

Praying Together:

Hymn                                                                           What A Friend We Have In Jesus

What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
O what peace we often forfeit
O what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer

Have we trials and temptations
Is there trouble anywhere
We should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer

Are we weak and heavy laden
Cumbered with a load of care
Precious Savior still our refuge
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Do thy friends despise forsake thee
Take it to the Lord in prayer
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee
Thou wilt find a solace there

Text for the Message                                                                       1 Peter 2: 1-12 (ESV)

So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”

 and

“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

Be still my soul thy best thy heav’nly Friend

Be still my soul thy God will undertake
To guide the future as He has the past
Your hope your confidence let nothing shake
All now mysterious shall be bright at last
Be still my soul the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below

Be still my soul the hour is hast’ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord
When disappointment grief and fear are gone
Sorrow forgot love’s purest joys restored
Be still my soul when change and tears are past
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last

Text for the Message                                                                     1 Peter 2: 19-25 (ESV)

For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning Our song shall rise to Thee
Holy holy holy Merciful and mighty
God in three persons Blessed Trinity

Holy holy holy All the saints adore Thee
Casting down their golden crowns Around the glassy sea
Cherubim and seraphim Falling down before Thee
Which wert and art And evermore shalt be

Holy holy holy Though the darkness hide Thee
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see
Only Thou art holy There is none beside Thee
Perfect in power In love and purity

Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty
All Thy works shall praise Thy name In earth and sky and sea
Holy holy holy Merciful and mighty

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer                                                          From Taught by Love  by Lavon Bayler

Wondrous God, present with us when we do not know it, valuing us when we do not care for ourselves, planting in us the seed of your word even when the soil of our hearts is hard and unyielding, open our eyes to recognize you here. May we sense your presence next to us. May we hear your voice. May we know your touch. May we see you in one another and in the beauty all around us. May your reality emerge deep inside each life, transforming our thoughts and deeds and our relationship with one another.

Amen, Amen

Text for the Message                                                                      1 Peter 1:13-25 (ESV)

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for

“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

Hymn                                                                                               How Great Thou Art

1) O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

[Refrain]
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

2) When through the woods, and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze
3) And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin

4) When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration
And then proclaim: “My God, how great Thou art!”

Benediction (Blessing)

Sometimes Alleluia,
Sometimes Praise the Lord
Sometimes Gently Singing,
Our hearts in one accord

Oh let us lift our voices,
Look toward the sky and start to sing
Oh let us now return His love,
Just let our voices ring Chorus

Oh let our joy be unconfined,
Let us sing with freedom unrestrained
Let’s take this feeling that we’re feeling now,
Outside these walls and let it rain. Chorus

Let the sound of praises fill the air
Oh let us sing the song of Jesus’ love,
To people everywhere. Chorus

Oh let the Spirit overflow,
As we are filled from head to toe.
We love you Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
And we want this world to know. Chorus

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer From Litany and Other Prayers: For the Common Lectionary Year A
by Everett Tilson and Phyllis Cole

O God whose rains fall upon the just and the unjust, hear our prayer. You set your rainbow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant you made with all earth’s creatures. You promised that whenever the bow was in the heavens, you would look upon it and remember the bond between us.

Unlike yours, our memory fades. Though we too have a sign by which to remember- the sign of the empty tomb- we often forget whose we are. But now, in gathering here, we remember well. Look upon us, come upon us, O God; send your promise by your Spirit. May it descend upon us like a dove.

Amen, Amen

Hymn                                                                            Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee

Jesus the very thought of Thee
With sweetness fills my breast
But sweeter far Thy face to see
And in Thy presence rest

No voice can sing no heart can frame
Nor can the mind recall
A sweeter sound than Thy blest name
O Savior of us all!

O Hope of every contrite heart
O Joy of all the meek
To those who ask, how kind Thou art
How good to those who seek

But what to those who find
Ah this nor tongue nor pen can show
The love of Jesus what it is
None but His loved ones know

Jesus our only joy be Thou
As Thou our prize wilt be
in thee be all our glory now, and through eternity.

Text for the Message                                                                        1 Peter 1:1-12 (ESV)

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

Message                                                                                 Genuineness of Your Faith

Hymn                                                                                                O, How I Love Jesus

There is a name I love to hear
I love to sing its worth
It sounds like music in my ear
The sweetest name on earth

Chorus O how I love Jesus
O how I love Jesus
O how I love Jesus
Because He first loved me

It tells me of a Saviour’s love
Who died to set me free
It tells me of His precious blood
The sinner’s perfect plea

It tells me what my Father hath
In store for every day
And tho’ I tread a darksome path
Yields sunshine all the way

It tells of One whose loving heart
Can feel my deepest woe
Who in each sorrow bears a part
That none can bear below
