Statement of Concern
Henry Hudson Town Houses
As the Housing Coalition of the First Baptist Church in Glens Falls, New York,
- We affirm
The American Baptist Policy Statement on Housing,
which states, in part,
The church's concern for the quality of housing stems from the belief that each person is precious in the sight of God and should have the opportunity to grow and develop his or her potential to the fullest extent possible. This development is threatened whenever social and economic forces dehumanize or degrade people or place them in living situations which are physically or socially hazardous to them.
- We agree that the physical condition and the social environment of the present Henry Hudson Town Houses are degrading and dehumanizing to those who live there, and that the dilapidated and unsafe conditions do not bode well for the wider community.
- We support the proposal now before the Common Council of the city of Glens Falls, proposing that the town houses be rebuilt anew at their present location and at the Murray Street Playground site.
We have reached this conclusion through information gathering, reflection, and discussion. We believe that the proposal before Common Council, though not perfect, will contribute to the dignity and well-being of those who live in the new complexes. We also believe that the proposal will also improve the quality of life in the city of Glens Falls and its environs - county and region.
Further, we urge that as the proposal moves forward, that serious consideration be given to the following:
- that the quality of life of the present residents of the Murray Street neighborhood will not be diminished, but enhanced.
- that during the period of transition, the needs of the present residents of the Henry Hudson complex will be met in a humane and considerate manner.
- that the planners and managers of the new complex will be held accountable for their assurances that the new complexes will be safer, and better maintained and monitored.
- that the new construction will ensure the units to be energy efficient.
- that affordable transportation will be provided for the residents of the Murrey Street neighborhood.
- that residents of the new complexes will have the opportunity to participate in decision making processes that will impact their quality of life.
- that Henry Hudson Town Houses will no longer be the name of the new complexes, and that they be renamed.
This statement of concern was adopted by the Housing Coalition of the First Baptist Church on September 12, 2006. For further information contact The Reverend Mr. Caspar James Green, pastor.
