Mary Champion

Mary Champion has dedicated her life to educating young children through Headstart.  She was instrumental in establishing Headstart in Warren County. Mary met Senator Robert Kennedy in 1965.  He gave her suggestions on how to begin.  Mary canvased the neighborhoods on foot to see if families would be interested,  She volunteered at Headstart and later Mary attended Skidmore University without walls and received a certificate in Early Childhood Education. She taught at Headstart for 25 years.  In the Fall of 2004, Mary received a Headstart regional award at the Sagamore Hotel   Also, in the Spring of 2005, Mary and her husband George traveled to Florida to receive a national recognition award for her Headstart service.

Mary and George were married by Rev. Wise in 1954.  They were married for 61 years before George passed away in 2015.  They had two children and four grandchildren.  Mary says that George was “number 1.”

Mary gave to her community by volunteering.  She was active member of the Glens Falls PTA.  She was also an active member of the NAACP and volunteered for several years in various functions and programs at the First Baptist Church. She worked in the church store and the Worship Committee with her good friends Shirley Clark and Ila Van Der Werker.

She enjoys cooking.  Over the years, neighbors, friends, her children’s friends would drop in and eat at any time.  Her door is always open!

Mary also likes the simple pleasures of going for rides and picnics with family and friends.  Mary’s favorite Psalm is the 23rd Psalm.  She has two favorite hymns – The Old Rugged Cross and His Eye is on the Sparrow.

Mary has always been and continues to be a treasure to our church family!
